Michigan State Progress: Shale Gas

Michigan has about 10,000 shale gas wells, all drilled in the Antrim Shale Formation.  The first Antrim gas well was drilled in 1940, but most of the Antrim development has occurred since the late 1980s.  Hydraulic fracturing has been used in virtually every Antrim gas well and is necessary to produce the gas efficiently.  There has been recent interest in potential for shale gas production from deeper horizons in Michigan.
