Shale Gas: Applying Technology to Solve America's Energy Challenges (2011)

Shale Gas: Applying Technology to Solve America's Energy Challenges, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), March 2011.  This new brochure provides the history of today's unconventional technology, including DOE's role through the years, and their planned role going forward. DOE is refocusing work done under Section 999 (Subtitle J) of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 on safety, environmental sustainability and quantifying the risks of exploration and production activity. DOE is exploring creation of a Shale Gas Initiative that could identify "best practices" that could be used by both operators and regulatory agencies. It has funded in part the Hydraulic Fracturing Chemical Registry to be hosted by the Ground Water Protection Council and the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.
