Montana implements fracking disclosure rules

BILLINGS, MT September 2, 2011 (The Billings Gazette) From now on, producers drilling for oil and gas in Montana have to disclose most of the chemicals they are using in hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," under new rules that recently were implemented.


Fracking is a practice widely used in horizontal drilling. The technique involves pumping about one million gallons of water per well, plus sand and some chemicals underground. The slurry is shot at extreme pressure into shale formations to break up the rock and free oil and gas deposits.
